Diet FAQ's
Q: What is the diet of the donkey?
A:
Low sugar and low protein is the most important issue for the donkeys diet. Test your hay and try to stay under 10% sugar and under 15% protein. Never feed donkeys or mules Alfalfa hay as this will cause laminitis which is similar to sugar diabetes in a human. Make sure they are getting clean water at least every other day as donkeys must have clean water or they will not drink and can easily colic. All equine must have clean water. A little extra work on the human’s part saves tears, money and sickness down the road as water is one of the most important nutrients for every living thing. If it is pooped or peed in you will need to wash out and replace as they do not want to lick dirty salt and this helps prevents worms. Equine are built to eat off the ground so sweep the area you are feeding hay in regularly.
